I have just received my third quarter rates notice from Kiama Municipal Council. They plan to outsource the rates collecting function from 1 June 2026.
I note from my Rates notice that they will cancel my direct debit on 1 June 2026.
I have paid by direct debit for over 20 years and have no desire to change that. What gives Council the authority to cancel my direct debit?
I do not have to join some other organisation to pay my rates. The so-called benefits of this new system have no relevance to me whatsoever.
And how much is Council paying these people to do this for them? Are they going to sack current employees?
Coucil should leave my current payment method as is.
They cannot accuse me of non-payment if they one-sidedly cancel my permission for them to debit my bank account.
This is high-handed bureaucratic behaviour.
